Who are we

OUR HISTORY

"What we, the people of Holy Name of Jesus, have heard and known for ourselves and what our ancestors have told us, we will not keep from our children, we will tell the next generation."

On July 5th , 1965, the first English speaking Parish of the City of Laval was founded and instituted as ‘Holy Name of Jesus Parish’ to commemorate the name after which IIe Jesus (Laval) was named by the early missionaries. In 1962, right in the middle of the Vatican II Council called by Pope John XXIII, Rev. Fr. John Colford was asked to come to IIe Jesus and minister to the English Catholics of the island. He began ministering to the English-speaking faithful from St. Pie-X Parish in Chomedey. Within a year, he was celebrating mass at two main sites, LeBlanc School in Chomedey and St. Paul School in Duvernay and later on also in Fabreville (Our Lady of Peace).

On August 15th 1967 the parish bought property on Chomedey Blvd for the church and work began for the building of the church. The long awaited pleasure of having a church building to celebrate mass and other sacraments was finally completed by the hard work of Fr. Colford along with wardens, the Ladies Auxiliary and Men’s association as well as with the generous help and donations of all the faithful.  On May 25th, 1969-on the Feast of Pentecost- the first mass was celebrated by Bishop Norman J. Gallagher. On September 26th 1969 His Excellency Archbishop Paul Gregoire blessed the church and on September 24th, 1995, the church, now debt free, was consecrated by His Excellency Archbishop Jean-Claude Turcotte.

Rev. Fr. John Colford served the parish for 41 years and on August 29th, 2003, the community celebrated his dedicated service and welcomed Rev. Fr. Peter Sabbath as their new pastor who, along with his associate pastors, served the community so faithfully and lovingly for the next 12 years.  The various associates pastors who served at our Parish were: Fr. Victor Tucci, Fr. Umberto Ranieri, Fr. Gerald (Gerry) Westphal, Fr. Thomas Dowd (auxiliary Bishop), Fr. Marco Guzman, Fr. Stephen Otvos, Fr. Herbert Shulz and Fr. Jason Piper.

On September 1st, 2015, the Order of Carmelite Fathers (O.Carm) started to serve in the parish at the request of His Excellency Archbishop Christian Lépine and on November 1st, 2015 Fr. Joy Abraham O.Carm was installed as Pastor by His Excellency Bishop Thomas Dowd and Fr. Deepak Jose O. Carm was named the associate pastor.

Blessed be the most
